Ellipsis Math believes that all children can be successful
with 21st-century mathematics! A few children understand new
concepts and skills quickly, and remember them forever. For
most children, though, these concepts and skills need to be
practiced many, many times. Without this extended practice,
many children lack the basic foundations for future success.
Dr.
Valerie J. Henry
Valerie Henry received a B.A. in Mathematics from the
University of California, Davis in 1973, California Teaching
Credentials for both Multiple Subjects and Secondary
Mathematics in 1986, and a Doctorate in Education (Ed.D.)
from the University of California, Irvine in 2004. During
her 16 years teaching primarily middle school mathematics,
she received numerous awards, including National Board
Certification in Early Adolescent Mathematics and California
State Finalist for the Presidential Award for Excellence in
Mathematics & Science Teaching. Dr. Henry has been providing
professional development for in-service teachers for more
than 20 years, working with the California Math Project,
Renaissance Mathematics, PBS Math Online, and numerous
county departments of education, schools, and school
districts. Dr. Henry is currently a Lecturer in Mathematics
Education at UC Irvine, and also continues to offer
research-based professional development for K-6 elementary
teachers and secondary mathematics teachers.
Summer Math Workbooks
Dr. Henry began developing the summer math workbooks
(Math Sprints, Math Muscles, Staying in Shape, Pumping Up
for Algebra, and Cross Training for Geometry) as a way to
have something to share with middle school parents who asked
for summer practice materials. Since then, these workbooks
have been purchased by thousands of families and have been
used as summer school materials across the nation.
Basic Facts Programs
Dr. Henry’s interest in basic facts fluency began when
she, as a 6th grader, was challenged to finally
memorize her multiplication facts. Eternally grateful to
that wise teacher, she chose to do her dissertation research
on the California mathematics standard that calls on all
first grade students to "know the addition facts (sums to
20) and the corresponding subtraction facts and commit them
to memory" (California State Board of Education, 1999,
Number Sense 2.1). After discovering that less than 1 out of
every 15 of the sampled students had reached an 80% or
better mastery of this standard by the end of first grade,
Dr. Henry developed a curriculum for basic facts that
incorporates research on best practices from countries
around the world as well as cognitive research on memory and
retrieval. This curriculum has been piloted by more than 100
classroom teachers, and has been revised as a result of
feedback from students, teachers, and parents.
Research comparing the Early
Number Fluency program with traditional flashcard/timed test
approaches, has shown remarkable results!
